Расследование американских налоговиков повергло швейцарский финансовый сектор в состояние паранойи: банкиры боятся приезжать в США и вообще покидать свою страну, опасаясь попасть в тюрьму. Об этом сообщает Agence France-Presse. По словам главы Швейцарско-американской торговой палаты Мартина Навиля (Martin Naville), сейчас в стране до тысячи таких банкиров. Юрист Даглас Хорнунг согласился с такой оценкой и уточнил, что преследования со стороны властей США опасаются даже менеджеры среднего и низшего звена. Власти США не раскрывают данные об обвинениях в адрес швейцарских банкиров. По данным СМИ, сейчас расследование ведется в отношении как минимум 24 топ-менеджеров финансового сектора Швейцарии. Это число, как ожидается, в будущем существенно увеличится, поскольку Вашингтон со временем будет получать от Берна все больше информации о банках, услугами которых пользовались налоговые уклонисты. Опасения банкиров относительно судебного преследования со стороны США существенно возросли после ареста в Италии бывшего управленца из UBS Рауля Вейла (Raoul Weil). Банкир, разыскиваемый властями США за содействие налоговым уклонистам, был арестован в Болонье 21 октября. UBS в 2009 фактически признался в помощи налоговым уклонистам, согласившись выплатить США 780 миллионов долларов штрафа за отказ от судебного преследования. Расследование американских властей привело также к закрытию двух швейцарских банков — Frey & Co. и Wegelin & Co. Под давлением Вашингтона и ЕС власти Швейцарии меняют законодательство и постепенно отказываются от банковской тайны. 15 октября Берн подписал Конвенцию о взаимном административном содействии по налоговым вопросам Организации экономического сотрудничества и развития. Следующим шагом швейцарских властей может стать подписание соглашения об автоматическом обмене данными банковских клиентов.
